Chitwan is one of the most popular wildlife destinations in Nepal. You can visit Chitwan National Park, enjoy a jeep safari, go on a canoe ride, watch birds and learn about Tharu culture.

For a first visit, a two-night Chitwan safari package is a good choice. It gives you time to reach Sauraha, enjoy a full day of activities and leave without rushing. A one-day safari is also possible if you already have a hotel in Sauraha. If you want more time for wildlife and nature, you can choose three nights or more.

Before booking, check where the package starts. A safari from a hotel in Sauraha is different from a day trip starting in Kathmandu. Also check how much time you will actually spend in the park.

Package details, prices and availability can change, so confirm the final itinerary and total cost with the provider.

Start with the pickup point

Nepal Tourism Board describes Sauraha as a visitor area with hotels, homestays, restaurants and jungle activities. If you book a hotel separately, ask the safari provider whether pickup from your hotel is included.

If you travel from Kathmandu or Pokhara, find out whether transport means a tourist bus, a private vehicle or a transfer from a bus stop. These are different services. NTB’s Chitwan guide identifies Bharatpur as an air-access point, but you still need a transfer from the airport to your hotel.

For a first visit, travelling from Kathmandu, completing a safari and returning on the same day can make the trip very tiring. Ask for a door-to-door schedule before paying. For an overnight package, keep the arrival day flexible because road travel can take longer than expected.

Two nights: a sample plan

The following is an example itinerary. Your activities will depend on the provider, season and availability.

Day 1: Arrival and hotel check-in. Travel to your lodge and confirm the meeting time for the next day’s activities. If you arrive early, you can take a village walk or enjoy a cultural activity.

Day 2: Main safari day. You can choose a longer jeep safari, a shorter drive with another activity or a guided programme. Ask how long you will spend inside the park and whether the vehicle is shared. Several activities listed together do not always mean a full day inside the park.

Day 3: Breakfast and departure. Ask about the transfer time before adding a morning activity. Leave enough time for your next connection.

If you want a full-day drive and a separate morning for birds or a river outing, consider a third night. More time gives you more opportunities, but no package can guarantee a tiger or any other animal.

Green Park Chitwan: compare different stay lengths

Green Park’s official site lists one-night, two-night and three-night programmes. The property is in Tigerpoint, Baghmara. Check the transfer arrangements because not every Chitwan package starts from the same place.

Before booking, ask: Which jeep excursion is included? Does it enter the national park? Is the vehicle shared? Are meals, permits and taxes included? The activities list also includes elephant-related experiences, so ask for the exact programme if you do not want this activity.

Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge: compare the location as well as the activities

The operator’s three-day Tharu Lodge itinerary includes an arrival day, a river and jeep day and a departure day. The property is in Amaaltari on the western side of Chitwan, not in Sauraha. The operator recommends at least three nights for a longer visit.

Before booking, ask: What is the transfer cost? Is the itinerary available for your dates? Which river, park entry and activities are included? Do not use a Sauraha transfer estimate for this lodge.

Independent Sauraha stay: accommodation and activities separately

You can also book a hotel in Sauraha and arrange activities separately. This gives you more flexibility, but you must coordinate the hotel, transport, park entry and safari yourself.

A room booking is not a safari package. Unless the selected room offer explicitly includes activities, budget for them separately. Confirm cancellation conditions before combining a non-refundable room with an activity that is not yet available.

What should the price include?

There is no single Chitwan package price because every package has different inclusions. Request a dated total for your group and check official park charges through the Chitwan National Park website. A price for one nationality or a shared vehicle may not apply to your booking.

Package or separate bookings: compare like for like

Here is a made-up budgeting example, not a current supplier quote. Suppose two travellers receive a package total of US$400. Booking separately could cost US$140 for two hotel nights, US$160 for the same activities and permits, US$70 for matching transfers and US$50 for meals. The total would be US$420.

The package would be US$20 cheaper in this example, but only if the room, activity duration, group size and cancellation conditions are the same. Replace these figures with your own quotes. A lower price for a shorter drive or a different park entry is not the same offer.

Important things to check before booking

Before paying, ask which activities are operating on your dates and what happens if conditions change. An online listing does not confirm that every advertised excursion is available.

Is one day enough for Chitwan?

It can be enough for one activity if you are already staying near Sauraha. If you are travelling from another city, two nights gives you more time and a less rushed schedule.

Does a hotel reservation include park entry and a safari?

Only if those inclusions appear in the exact offer you book. Ask for the activity names, duration and park charges in writing.

Should I choose a shared or private jeep?

Compare the total for your group, permitted occupancy and guide arrangements. Ask whether a private vehicle changes the schedule or only the number of fellow passengers. Privacy alone does not guarantee better sightings.

Should I return to Kathmandu on the day of my international flight?
